bedsbirds : Message: Sibe Chiff and other stuff
At Meadow Lane Lakes/GP a Water Pipit flew over calling a few times, and the
Pink-footed Goose was still with the Greylags. On walking back to the car a
Chiffchaff popped up in front of me - it started calling and I instantly thought
it looked good for a tristis. After a bit of research this evening I think it's
an excellent candidate for a Siberian Chiffchaff. It was in bushes outside of
the house at the end of Meadow Lane - TL085495. A video-grab and a sound
recording can be found on my blog here:

This Weekend (7th/8th January 2012)
Just back from another volunteer day in the park. The new hours (9-3) allowed us to get loads of work done along the edge of the main lake opposite Fingers. We also had a really good turn out of people which helped as we split in to groups to carry out the coppicing on several sections and the dead hedging of the cut wood. Some of the Willow was processed for use by a local school in weaving demonstrations.
Yesterday I met up with JA and DK around the park and we had all the usual suspects. Grey Wagtail along the Canoe Slalom and Stonechat on Fenlake Meadows were the highlights. The Stonechat was located a couple of fields to the west of it's usual fence line location. There were also 3 Snipe on the flooded section of Fenlake. Pochard numbers have increased again this week, standing at 70+ now along with Tufted Ducks, Gadwall and Wigeon. On Fingers we had 7 Shoveler and 7 Teal
This morning met up with DK, before the volunteer task, for a quick look around Fingers which was fairly quiet. We managed to find a few Teal and a couple of Gadwall on west Fingers but little else.
As the volunteer group walked the sections checking which Willows should be coppiced we flushed a Water Rail along the edge of the main lake. At the end of the day ~200 Lapwing were high over the park heading across to Fenlake.
If you fancy joining the volunteer group next time check out the dates on the right hand side of this page. If 9-3 is too long then feel free to come down for a morning or afternoon or any time you can. It's good fun and a real good work out.
